The stamped set the inspector holds is the set we pour from
Lake Alfred's Building Permits page asks for the permit card, the Notice of Commencement and the stamped documents to be on site at inspection. For a steel building, that stamped set carries the foundation plan and can include a separate anchor-bolt plan. The inspector checks the forms against those sheets, so we build every bolt template from the same revision, never from a dealer's sales drawing.
If your dealer sends a newer revision after the permit is issued, tell us, and have the permit holder upload it and e-mail the city a revision letter, which is how Lake Alfred's permit page says a post-issue revision gets flagged. A template built to revision B while revision A sits in the permit box is a failed inspection waiting to happen. Our metal building foundation page covers the template and the pre-pour check in full, and the Lake Alfred service area page covers everything else we pour in town.

Accela, a utility account and a 2 pm call: lining up the pre-pour inspection
Lake Alfred runs permits through Accela, and inspections can't be same day. The cutoff for a next-day inspection is 2 pm. New construction also needs a utility account with the city before any inspection, so open it when the permit issues. Forget it and the first inspection can stall even with perfect forms.
Here's how a steel building pour lines up around those rules:
- Pad graded and compacted, termite treatment by the pest control company, poly, steel and bolt templates set.
- The permit holder requests the pre-pour inspection in Accela or by phone before 2 pm.
- Inspection as soon as the next day, with the stamped set on site.
- Ready-mix ordered for after a pass, not before.
A miss slides everything a day. On a summer job that means forms and bolts sitting another afternoon in sun and storms, so we schedule to keep that gap short. Florida law also requires a recorded Notice of Commencement for improvements over $2,500, and every steel building foundation in our range clears that, so record it before work starts.

What It Costs
Our ranges for a Lake Alfred steel building foundation, poured from the stamped set.
| Job | Per sq ft | Typical project | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered slab with thickened edge and bolt templates | $8 to $14 | $15,000 to $80,000+ | Footprint, fill on a low pad, floor loads |
| Column piers with slab poured between | $8 to $14 | Priced from your stamped sheet | Pier depth, geotechnical fill testing, pump |
Ranges only. The free written estimate follows our site visit.
Grove equipment barns and packing sheds near the Citrus Research and Education Center
Lake Alfred is home to the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center on Experiment Station Road, and grove land runs around the town. A steel building out here can be an equipment barn, a packing shed or storage for a grove operation.
If the building is used primarily for agriculture on farm land and nobody lives in it, Florida's farm building exemption may take it out of the building code. Our farm building exemption guide explains the test and its limits. Inside city limits, ask Community Development how it handles that claim before you plan around skipping review. The city's permit page also lists a Permit Exemption Request form; ask whether it applies to your building at all rather than assuming. Floodplain rules apply either way.
Grove buildings bring their own floor questions. Will a loaded trailer, a forklift or a spray rig roll across the slab? Should a wash-down bay slope to one side? Do the bay doors need a flush threshold? Tell us before the engineer finishes, because loads and slopes change the sheet, and changing a stamped sheet after the permit means another trip through Community Development.

How the Job Goes
Match the revision
We confirm the sheet you send matches the stamped set in your Lake Alfred permit.
Site walk
Pad height, soil, truck route and floor loads, checked on the lot.
Estimate in writing
Piers, fill and pump are priced as separate lines so you can compare.
Inspect, then pour
Concrete is scheduled for after the pre-pour inspection passes, and curing starts right after finishing.
Columns, uplift and fill on a Lake Alfred steel pad
A steel frame doesn't sit on its slab the way a house wall does. Each column pushes a concentrated load into its footing, and wind pulls the other way. That's why the sheet may call for piers under each column, a thickened edge poured with the floor, or both. We pour what's drawn, and if something looks wrong for the ground, we raise it with your engineer rather than quietly change a section.
The ground matters as much as the steel. Look up your parcel on the NRCS Web Soil Survey before the visit, since Polk has both wet flatwoods sand and dry ridge sand. If the pad has to be built up more than 12 inches with compacted fill, the Florida Building Code calls for a geotechnical investigation that sets the fill, lift thickness and density testing. Budget for that report on a low lot.
Under the slab, the code sets the order: compacted pad, then termite treatment by the pest control company, which files the certificate, then a 6-mil cover over the treated soil, then steel. Rain on treated soil before the poly means retreating it, so we schedule treatment, poly and the inspection request close together around that 2 pm cutoff.
Lake Alfred steel building prices worked out by footprint
Our range for engineered steel building foundations is $8 to $14 per sq ft, with projects from $15,000 to $80,000 or more. Before piers, fill or a pump, the per-foot math looks like this:
- 40 by 50 equipment barn, 2,000 sq ft: $16,000 to $28,000.
- 50 by 80 packing or storage building, 4,000 sq ft: $32,000 to $56,000.
Where a Lake Alfred job moves inside that range: column pier count and depth from the drawings, how much fill a low grove-edge pad needs, a thicker section for forklifts or loaded trailers, and a pump if the mixer can't reach. A geotechnical report and density tests, when fill triggers them, are separate costs to plan for. These are ranges, not a quote. You get a free written estimate after we see the site.
Lake Alfred paperwork to have before we walk the site
- Parcel ID. The Property Appraiser's permit agency list shows Lake Alfred as its own agency, and the Polk County Building Division keeps an office in Lake Alfred for unincorporated parcels, so confirm which side of the line you're on.
- Your Accela permit number, or where the application stands.
- Utility account status.
- The stamped foundation sheet and anchor-bolt plan, same revision as the permit.
- How the floor will be used: trailers, forklifts, a spray rig.
- The erector's start date.
Call (863) 269-3083 or send the packet through our contact page. Nearby, see Winter Haven, Haines City, Auburndale and Lakeland, or pole barn slabs in Lake Alfred for a post-frame barn.
